Eating disorders are complex conditions
Eating disorders may be caused by neurobiology, environmental stressors, societal and peer pressure, media exposure, or most often a combination of these.
If you are a parent who is concerned that your child may be developing an eating disorder, we offer comprehensive evaluation, treatment, and referral services as follows:
Outpatient Treatment:
Initial evaluation (up to 2 hours): includes input from parents and/or significant others, confidential interview with patient, complete physical examination, and lab work. A treatment plan will be developed including referrals to treatment professionals (typically dietitian and psychotherapist).
Follow-up visits are generally 20 to 30 minutes but may be longer if needed. Patients with anorexia nervosa are followed every one to two weeks initially and then less frequently once weight gain is established. Patients with other types of eating disorders are followed as often as needed.
After approximately 8 weeks, a meeting may be recommended to include all members of the professional treatment team as well as the patient and parents or significant others. We will discuss progress to date and make further recommendations and revisions to the treatment plan.
Parent Consultation:
Parents who are concerned about a child but who may not be able to bring them in for an evaluation because of geographic distance, reluctance, or another reason, may schedule a single one-hour consultation in person or by video conference to discuss their child's case.
Physician advising:
Patients who do not live in the area may want to schedule a one-time visit, which includes a post visit conference between Dr. Schack and your personal physician. You may then elect to have your own personal physician continue to follow you if they agree, with telephone consultation provided to your physician as needed.
Inpatient (Hospital) Treatment:
If you are referred by another professional or know that hospitalization will be required, please complete our application prior to scheduling an admission appointment. We generally do the admission history and physical exam in our office and then accompany you to the admitting department. Find out more about our medical stabilization program.
